Featured Car of the Week - Why is the Renault Clio V6 Phase 1 So Special?
Published on Thursday November 14th 2019
The Renault Clio is a common site on UK roads, and for good reasoning. The model has been a phenomenal success over the course of its lifespan, and with over 15 million of these sold worldwide, the Clio has become Renault’s best-selling model of all time (what a stat)! That said, it's not unusual for a car manufacturer to take their best-selling model and give it a little more oomph, think Focus ST, Golf GTi.
In some instances, they crank it up a notch seeking further performance gains and so an even sportier derivative is born, think Focus RS, Golf R. But if you are leftfield enough when it comes to all things automotive, purchasing a car that ultimately rolls-off the same production line as the standard model, give or take some modifications along the way, just doesn't cut it.
Enter our Phase 1 Renault Clio V6 Renault Sport... The traditional Clio’s arc angel with an attitude problem no one can solve. Built by Tom Walkinshaw Racing (TWR) in Uddevalla, Sweden, this is a, wait for it, a rear mid-engine, rear-wheel-drive configured Renault Clio... What?!
The Clio V6 was an extremely low production run-out and was not only rare when initially produced, but now even rarer given that nearly two decades have passed since it's launch. Slammed to the ground and wide-bodied enough to appear as though it needs two lanes on the highway, in this case a picture really does paint a thousand words.
This Phase 1 stunner may have been registered in 2002, but like a wine fine, this Clio V6 has aged with beauty. It may be small in stature, but don’t underestimate the power of this beast. With a 3.0L V6 petrol engine, this weapon will reach speeds of 0-100 km/h (s) in just 6.2 seconds, with maximum power clocking in at 230bhp - A.K.A a monster. As a rear-wheel drive vehicle, the maximum torque of this bad boy clocks in 300 Nm at 3750 rpm.
Composed with 'Iceberg' Silver metallic paint and 17-inch alloy wheels, the exterior of this model is one to admire. No matter rain or shine, the Renault Clio V6 Phase 1 will always be a looker. As well as a beautiful exterior, the interior has an array of useful features to ensure that driver safety, comfort and enjoyment are always top of mind. Air-conditioning, full in-car entertainment system, electric front windows, climate control, finished in 'Iceberg Silver' metallic paint over Ebony Alcantara Renaultsport seats is the icing on the cake for this model.
Designed as a collector’s item, there is no doubt that this fits the billing. With only 1,513 produced, Renault ensured that the owner of this work of art would cherish this vehicle like no other. This is the perfect medium for those who enjoy the thrill of driving that entwines with cheeky one-upmanship.
